OXFORDS SELL TO £500 AT KELSO

Oxford shearling rams from Andrew Rutherford's annual Langrigg consignment from Guards Farm, Gretna, Dumfriesshire sold to a top of £500 at Kelso Ram Sales.

The top ram, a Billesdons Braveheart son, was bought by Highfield Farming, The Knock, Duns, Berwickshire. A further three Langrigg shearlings went to the same buyer at £400 each, joining two rams purchased from Langrigg at last year's sale. They will be used on the farm's large Cheviot x Shetland commercial ewe flock.

One Langrigg shearling went for pedigree work at £350 to Brendan & Amy Hall who run the Caston flock at Attleborough in Norfolk. This ram was sired by Greenlands Garrosh.

The Langrigg pen averaged £410 for five.

Hello all – I hope the first day of summer finds everybody in good health.

Well, I’m nearing the end of my two-year tenure as President. It’s been challenging at times, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it!

I’m a big believer in getting out there and introducing myself to people and managed to get to five of our official events last year (a lot of the others were cancelled due to Covid of course): The Great Yorkshire Show, Worcester Sale, Moreton in Marsh Show, Melton Mowbray Show and Sale, Masham Sheep Fair with our AGM - a total of very nearly 2,000 miles!

At the end of March, I paid a visit to Tom Boothman, one of our breeders in Yorkshire. We were given a very warm welcome on a snowy day, and it was a privilege to be shown his fine flock in picturesque surroundings.

Now I’m looking forward to getting out and about again this year and hope to meet up with as many of you as possible. In an ideal world, I’d attend every show, but of course work and commitments make this impossible, though I do keep trying to win the lottery!

We have updated the details of our official shows and results, sales and events on our website and Facebook. Please carry on supporting the shows, to ensure that we continue to have our own classes in 2022 and into the future. Thanks to all those who have already competed this year at our early shows, and my congratulations to all prize-winners.

I’d like to repeat my thanks to Holly Plante for all her enthusiasm and work for the Association and extend a very warm welcome to our new secretary – Jess Middleditch.

Council is delighted to announce the appointment of Jess Middleditch as the new Secretary of the

Oxford Down Sheep Breeders’ Association.

Jess brings considerable administrative experience to her new role and also has a strong background in pedigree sheep breeding. Her brother Harry previously bred the very successful Knowl Oxford Down flock on the family farm in Suffolk.

Jess and her partner farm near Thetford in Norfolk where both commercial and pedigree sheep flocks run alongside an arable enterprise.

Council would like to thank outgoing Secretary Holly Plante for all her work for the Association and wish her well in her future studies.

Jess will be attending NSA Sheep 2022 at Malvern and the Worcester Show & Sale and looks forward to meeting members at these events.

The dates for the 2022 shows and sales have been added.

The Association has two official sales, held at Worcester market on Saturday 6th August and Melton Mowbray market on Saturday 10th September. The entries at both sales are subject to inspection by a veterinary surgeon and Association inspectors. Catalogues are available from the auctioneers or from the Association’s website shortly before each sale. There is normally a good selection of both rams and ewes available at these sales. Further details can be found here

One of the best ways to see some quality Oxford Down sheep and meet members of the Association is to visit a show which has Oxford Down classes. Breeders will be pleased to discuss any aspect of the breed or the Association in the sheep lines after judging. Further details of where to see Oxford classes can be found here
